We provide assistance in obtaining an official confirmation/certificate of marital status from the Czech Republic. This document can confirm the lack of a registered marriage (in the Czech Republic and elsewhere), current marital status (being married), or the fact of divorce. The document can be obtained using a power of attorney. We will handle all necessary certifications and secure an apostille.

We understand that each case is unique. Please contact us for a personal consultation – we will review your specific situation and develop an action plan to obtain the necessary confirmation for you.

This service is available to individuals who currently reside or have previously resided officially in the Czech Republic. This includes foreign nationals who hold, or have previously held, valid long-term visas for the country, residence permits (temporary or permanent), and citizens of the country itself.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to obtain this document for individuals who have never been official residents of the Czech Republic.

How to verify and obtain a certificate of marital status in the Czech Republic

Unfortunately, there is no unified registry in the Czech Republic where you can obtain a certificate confirming a person's marital status (whether a person is married, unmarried, or divorced). No such registry exists in the country.

If the marriage was registered or dissolved in the country itself, the relevant documents can be obtained from the Czech Civil Registry Office in the district where the marriage was registered, or from the court in the district where the divorce was granted, if it took place within the Czech Republic.

In this case, an alternative approach must be used. The Czech Republic operates the Czech Population Register ("Registr obyvatel České republiky"). This database contains records for all residents of the country and their basic data. The register includes all Czech citizens, foreign nationals currently living in the state, and individuals who previously lived in the country under long-term visas or temporary/permanent residence permits.

You can request an official extract from the Population Register for a specific person. While this document contains standard personal data (full name, date of birth, address and more), its most crucial feature is the person’s marital status ("Rodinný stav" in Czech – a literal translation would be “family state”, but it indeed corresponds to a person’s marital status).

This field can contain the following statuses:

  • "Svobodný/svobodná" (single). This indicates that the person has never been married and is not currently married. This document can serve as confirmation that no marriage has been registered in the Czech Republic and that the person has never been married anywhere.
  • "Ženatý/vdaná" (married). This indicates the person is currently in a marriage, though it does not provide any further details about it.
  • "Rozvedený/rozvedená"(divorced). This provides information that the person was divorced, but does not specify when or how the divorce took place. It can also serve as confirmation that the person is not currently married.
  • "Vdovec/vdova" (widower/widow). This status is used when the person's spouse is deceased.

Thus, an extract from the Czech Population Register can serve as an official certificate confirming a person’s marital status.

The document can be obtained at any Czech POINT contact office. However, if the document will be used outside the state, it must be requested from a notary public. Notaries have access to the Czech POINT system and can issue an extract with their own official notarial certification, which makes the document valid for international use.

Furthermore, such a notarized document can then be legalized with an apostille or, if required by the destination country, undergo the process of consular legalization.

How to obtain confirmation of marital status in the Czech Republic

How do I get a certificate of no marriage in the Czech Republic?

As mentioned previously, there is no single office in the Czech Republic where you can obtain this certificate. The Czech civil registry offices are not part of a unified national network and are organized on a territorial basis, with individual offices for each city or district.

The solution is to obtain an extract from the Czech Population Register (the above-mentioned "Registr obyvatel"). This document contains a person's marital status. If the person is not married, the status will be listed as "Svobodný/svobodná" (single), or "Rozvedený/rozvedená" (divorced).

Logically, both statuses confirm that the person is not currently in a marriage that was registered in the Czech Republic or anywhere else. Currently, this is the only available method to obtain such confirmation.

The extract can be obtained from any Czech POINT office. For use abroad, it must be issued directly by a notary. The notarized document can then be apostilled or legalized through other required channels.

How can I obtain confirmation of marriage in the Czech Republic?

In the Czech Republic, it is only possible to obtain confirmation of a marriage (more precisely, a marriage certificate) that was officially registered within the country. To do this, you must contact the local Civil Registry Office in the district where the marriage was registered.

If the marriage was registered in another country, the corresponding document must be obtained from the authorities of that country.

Can I get confirmation of a divorce in the Czech Republic?

Yes, if the divorce was finalized by the authorities in the Czech Republic. The official result of such proceedings is a court-issued divorce decree ("rozsudek o rozvodu manželství"). This document is the primary proof of divorce.

Furthermore, if the marriage was also registered in the Czech Republic, the court will typically automatically notify the relevant Civil Registry Office of the divorce. The Civil Registry Office will make a corresponding note about the divorce in the marriage certificate. Consequently, obtaining a duplicate of the marriage certificate will also serve as confirmation of the divorce.

If the divorce proceedings took place in another country, you must request any confirmation of the divorce from that country's authorities. However, if the marriage was registered in the Czech Republic but the divorce was granted abroad, the Czech Civil Registry Office can make a note about the divorce and you can then obtain a duplicate of the divorce certificate, which will serve as valid confirmation. We provide assistance with this procedure – please contact us if needed.

An indirect confirmation of divorce can be the same extract from the Czech Population Register. However, it will only show the general status ("rozvedený/rozvedená"), though this will likely also help solve your problem.

Review: I contacted this company for assistance with legalizing a marriage certificate issued in Prague. Arkadiy promptly clarified what needed to be done for the document to be accepted by the migration authorities in China – we settled on obtaining an apostille. For the apostille process, I sent the original document to Prague, everything arrived without issues, and Arkadiy processed the apostille as quickly as possible before sending it back to me. The migration office accepted the document without any problems (I only needed to add a Chinese translation). I highly recommend this firm, the processing time was minimal, I checked other companies, and their estimated processing times were 2-3 times longer. Thank you so much for your help!
